Vaayu Yoga Shala

Vaayu Yoga Shala (VYS) method is based on sage Patanjali’s Astanga Yoga, which defines yoga as the cessation of fluctuations in the consciousness. VYS method stresses the correlation between physical and mental discipline. Emphasizes proper alignment of the body in Yoga postures (asanas) to promote harmony between the motor and sensory nerves in the body. The use of props helps students learn proper alignment in a safe and effective way. Vaayu Yoga Shala meaningfully sequences asanas to have a powerful effect on the body and mind, often incorporating the divine Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation), which encourages harmony in the functioning of the Pancha Vaayus (five winds). According to Hatha Yoga, five vital energies or vaayus (winds) pervade the human body and perform various functions. They are: Udana, which moves in the thoracic cavity and controls the intake of air and food; Prana, which moves in the chest region and controls respiration; Samana, which aids in digestion; Apana, which moves in the lower abdomen and controls the function of excretion; and Vyana, which permeates the entire body and distributes energy to all parts. Vaayu Yoga Shala teaches one to be mindful while practicing asana – a form of meditation in action. Mindfulness during asana practice produces a balance between movement and resistance. Vaayu Yoga Shala method helps students develop the physical strength and mental control to hold asanas for relatively long periods of time, strengthening muscles, calming the nervous system and promoting awareness of one’s entire body. Vaayu Yoga Shala also teaches Pranayama (breath control exercises); “Prana” means breath and “ayama” means expansion or prolongation. Pranayama is the prolongation of breath and its restraint. Practice of Pranayama develops steady and peaceful mind, strong will power and mental clarity. The benefits derived from practicing yoga are according to one’s frame of mind. A mechanical and casual practice gives limited and casual results and mindful and intense practice brings unlimited and intense benefits. With determination, a yoga student may attain a state of equilibrium of body, mind and emotions.
