September 2021: Yoga for Digestion & Improved Mind Body Function

Ahhh! The shift into late summer and early fall is finally upon us. August was a heat wave! I had the opportunity to take some time away and visit with family and friends at the beach. We have been hunkered down in our remote rural Virginia farm location for almost the entirety of the past two years and it was a relief to enjoy of a change of scenery and a cool ocean breeze. I was literally going to melt.

Thankfully, with the start of September, we have finally felt a shift in the extreme heat of summer into the late summer, the fifth season, in between summer and fall. If you are lucky to live in a place with a temperate climate, you will experience this luxurious season. It is personally, as I have mentioned before, one of my most favorite seasons. Not only does it usually start with my birthday at the beginning of September, but the weather is perfect - warm days and cool nights. These temperature differences cause the dampness and fog in the mountains that identifies the "Indian Summer".

If you do not enjoy a little dampness in the air, you may not love this season. Those who tend toward dampness may not appreciate the extra moisture. It can make you feel heavy, dense or even swollen and issues like edema may surface. Foods such as sugar and wheat, which are energetically damp and cause sluggish digestion, should be avoided or at least significantly reduced.  Enjoy a restorative sequence to help with digestion this time of year and some more inspiration for your yoga practice below.
