About 15 years ago, I became interested in Yoga and Astrology. Not in relation to each other, but it was about that time that my Virgo Sun progressed into Libra. What does this mean? Most people know astrology through their sun sign, ie in what constellation the sun was at the time of your birth. Your sun sign is how you shine in the world. It is how others see you. So I spent the first 20 years of my life as a Virgo. Virgos tend to be well-grounded as Virgo is an Earth sign. Virgo is the sign of service and humanitarian pursuits. Virgos also tend to be very health-conscious. Virgo rules the small intestine and the digestive system, so this is where trouble can set in when we are out of balance. Virgos are also analytical and critical of self and others.
About 5 years ago I took a workshop with a local astrologer, Cheryl Hopkins, also a Virgo. Cheryl had us determine the overall qualities of our chart because while the Sun is often thought of as the center of our universe, there are at least 9 other heavenly bodies influencing us at all times. At this workshop, I learned that I have at least 6 planets in air signs including my Rising Sign. Your rising sign is the constellation on the horizon at the EXACT time and place of your birth. It is the sign that rules your birth chart. And, as I mentioned above, now my progressed sun is in Libra. I was shocked to think that I- the grounded, serving, analytical, yoga and health practitioner could be so airy!
Luckily ,all signs have their advantages and disadvantages, the key is owning what you have and recognizing when you are out of balance. Learning a bit about your astrology and about your ayurvedic dosha will help with your practice of svadyaya - or self study. The more we know about ourselves, the more we will be grounded in our own truth and the better able we are to bring this balanced well- being out into our communities and relationships. Based on what you know about your astrology, what are some ways you become out of balance?
